Dynamics GP (Great Plains) → Business Central

Dynamics GP is ending. Your path forward isn't.

Microsoft ends GP support on December 31, 2029 — and if you're on GP 2018 or older, your extended support ends January 2028 and you've already lost tax and year-end updates. We migrate Great Plains shops to Dynamics 365 Business Central: assessment, data, go-live, and the support after. Remote, US-wide.

The clock, verified

The Dynamics GP end-of-life timeline.

These are Microsoft's published dates. The pattern is simple: every exit ramp is behind you except the last ones.

JANUARY 10, 2023GP 2018 / 2018 R2 mainstream support ended passed

GP 2018 moved to extended support — which does not include tax or year-end updates. If you're closing years on GP 2018 today, you're already doing it unsupported.

APRIL 1, 2025New perpetual license sales ended passed

Microsoft stopped selling GP perpetual licenses to new customers.

APRIL 1, 2026All new-customer sales ended passed

Subscription sales to new customers ended. GP is now closed to new buyers entirely; existing customers with active plans can still add users and modules.

JANUARY 11, 2028GP 2018 extended support ends

If you're on GP 2018 or older: after this date, no support of any kind. This is the deadline that matters for most small GP shops still running older versions.

DECEMBER 31, 2029All GP product support ends

Product enhancements, service packs, regulatory and tax updates, and technical support end for every GP version — including the current 18.x releases.

APRIL 30, 2031Final security patches end

After this date, GP receives nothing. An internet-connected ERP with no security patches is a standing invitation — and cyber insurers know it.

What "end of support" actually means

GP won't stop working. That's the trap.

Your GP install will boot fine on January 1, 2030. What changes is everything around it — quietly, then all at once:

  • Payroll & tax tables freeze — year-end becomes a manual workaround project
  • Security patches stop — an unpatched ERP holding your financials
  • Cyber insurance pushback — unsupported software is an underwriting red flag
  • GP talent evaporates — consultants and ISVs are already moving on

And the practical one: migrations get more expensive under deadline pressure. The companies that move on their own schedule get the good timelines and the good pricing.

1 · Assess

Free review of your GP environment: version, modules, ISVs, customizations, integrations, data volumes. You get a fixed quote and timeline — not an hourly meter.

2 · Map

Chart of accounts (keep or restructure), master records, open transactions, historical-data decision, and ISV replacements in the Business Central ecosystem.

3 · Migrate

Data migration with parallel validation, user training on real workflows, and a go-live timed to your month-end or fiscal year — typical small-business runs: 8–16 weeks.

4 · Run

Ongoing Business Central support, licensing, and administration — plus the managed IT and security under it. GP's read-only archive stays available for history.

Frequently asked questions

When does Dynamics GP support end?

Microsoft ends product support, enhancements, and regulatory (tax) updates for Dynamics GP on December 31, 2029, with security patches continuing only until April 30, 2031. Older fixed-lifecycle versions end sooner — GP 2018 and 2018 R2 extended support ends January 11, 2028, and extended support already excludes tax and year-end updates.

Is Dynamics GP still being sold?

No. Microsoft ended new perpetual license sales on April 1, 2025 and new subscription sales on April 1, 2026. Existing customers with active plans can still add users and modules, but no new customers can buy GP.

Do I have to move from GP to Business Central?

No one forces you, but staying means running an unsupported ERP: no tax updates, eventually no security patches, shrinking consultant availability, and rising cyber-insurance friction. Business Central is Microsoft's designated successor with migration tooling and promotional licensing for GP customers — but the right answer depends on your modules, ISVs, and plans, which is what an assessment determines.

What happens to my GP historical data?

Typically master records (customers, vendors, items, chart of accounts), open transactions, and GL history move to Business Central, while full historical detail is preserved in a read-only archive or reporting database. Bringing every historical transaction into BC is possible but rarely worth the cost — we help you make that call deliberately.

How long does a GP to Business Central migration take?

For small businesses on mostly core GP modules, typical migrations run roughly 8–16 weeks from kickoff to go-live, often timed to a month-end or fiscal-year boundary. Heavy customizations, many ISV add-ons, or complex integrations extend that — the readiness check above gives you an early read.

What does a migration cost?

It depends on modules, ISVs, data decisions, and user count — which is why we quote fixed-price after a free assessment rather than quoting blind. Small-business GP migrations are far more affordable than mid-market ERP projects, and Microsoft has offered promotional Business Central licensing for migrating GP customers.
