Camera Privacy Invasion

May 17, 2022

Improperly configured network devices can lead to a major invasion of privacy.

A Russian-based website contains a database of webcams and security cameras from all around the world that are open to the internet.  You can search by location. Cameras that are within businesses, street cameras, or even farms in case you wanted to watch live streams of cattle.

Using another site called Shodan you can also search for cameras. There are many that are set up within homes, pointing at driveways or backyards available for anyone to view, you will find some rather interesting camera feeds as well to say the least. Some of these of course have been left open intentionally, but I’m willing to bet that that’s not the case for all of them.

This leads us to an important point. It’s essential for devices to be configured correctly, especially if they’re going to be put onto the internet. Misconfigurations in IT systems can bring your company or your own personal privacy to its knees.

If you need a camera system installed professionally, we don’t personally do those, but Noah at Custom Security Solutions does amazing work. See his website here: https://www.customsecurityks.com/
